I received my degree in Fine Arts in Canada in 1971, and was employed as a graphic designer in Canada and Bermuda.
I returned to painting after coming home to Bermuda. I worked with acrylic when I first started painting and continued to do so until I discovered the joys of painting in watercolor. Watercolour has been my primary focus and challenge for the last 25 years.
I started painting outside on location, probably because I used to paint on my lunch hours, and found that I much preferred to paint out in the sun and wind than in a studio, I still work outside for the most part and my shows reflects my pleasure in trying to interpret the world around us.
After a trip to Wyoming and participation in a workshop with Scott Christensen about five years ago I started to paint with oils and continued to do so, primarily when painting on location with Jonah Jones.
Two years ago I was reintroduced to acrylics by artists on the West Coast of Canada and found that the paint qualities had changed considerably since my early days with the medium.
The new acrylics allow me to combine the transparent layering of watercolour with build up of heavy layers typical of oil painting, and yet still work quickly and freely in the manner most typical of my watercolours.
Acrylics allow me to control drying time so that I can layer without picking up underlying colour, or paint wet in wet with subtle blending all in the same painting.
I am an enthusiastic member and sometime leader of the local Plein Air painting group and teach watercolor workshops on an occasional basis.
I am married to a teacher who is also a watercolour artist, and have a daughter who is one of my most perceptive critics. I also have an ancient and venerable cat who has been known to help by lying on my pallete.
My work is available at the Dockyard Art Centre, and by appointment at my studio in Southampton. Please feel free to email me for further information.
